With the support of our members, partners and friends, ECF works on numerous EU projects to promote cycling all over Europe. Here is a quick look back at a few highlights of the year.

The CHIPS project has ended, but the Cycle Highway Academy will live on!

High-level Political Discussions at the CHIPS Final Conference in Frankfurt: This year, the CHIPS (Cycle Highways Innovation for smarter People Transport and Spatial Planning) project came to an end. With the help of nine project partners from Belgium, the Netherlands, UK and Germany, ECF promoted cycle highways as an effective and cost-efficient low carbon solution for commuting. Although the project is over, you can still explore the Cycle Highway Manual! The manual gives guidance to professionals involved in the planning, design, construction, selling, maintenance, monitoring or evaluation of cycle highways.

Is your Travel Time Worth your While?

This year, ECF took part in MoTiV, a fully-funded H2020 project designed to study and redefine how the time we use to travel is valued by individuals, and how this information is then used by urban planners to design and evaluate transport systems. Using the Woorti smartphone app, the MoTiV project partners were able to collect data on user preferences and behaviours regarding their door to door travel experience. Through the hard work of our members in Belgium, Croatia, France, Italy and Norway, the project collected information on over 65000 trips from 5600 users, paving the way for future research that will help replace car centered transport paradigms with a more holistic, multimodal approach.

Everyone can Ride a Cargo Bike

Cargo bikes are a perfect tool for creative minds to realise their businesses. Whether it is, coffee, ice cream, flower delivery or so much more. Meet Florianne and Carlos, two young entrepreneurs from Belgium and Mexico, who made use of the numerous ways to customize cargo bikes and turned it into a local start-up. Two years ago, they founded Veloccino, an eco-friendly coffee-bike business. They are two of the 100 local heroes that are being recruited as part of the CityChangerCargoBike project. As cargo bikes make a lasting impression, just being on the streets with one attracts a lot of attention and curiosity. Inevitably, these individuals become agents of change in their local communities and introduce new people to the world of cargo bikes. Next year, CCCB will be on the lookout for more local hero stories to inspire non-cyclists and show that everyone can easily ride a cargo bike. Stay updated; 100 webinars on cargo bikes are coming in 2020!

Design for People, Not for Cars! Active Mobility Solutions for Active Cities

235 million. The number of inactive European today. Sedentarity has become a major challenge for individuals and the European Union over the past decades. With 70% of Europeans living in cities, we know they have a decisive role in stimulating physical activity. Funded by the European Union and led by Sport and Citizenship Think tank, PACTE project (Promoting Active Cities Throughout Europe) strives to transform cities into Active Cities. After leading three successful workshops, the PACTE Project will now evaluate the gathered information in a matrix and share the outcomes with cities and decision-makers.
