Cities & Regions for Cyclists holds its annual Network Day in Gdańsk before Velo-city 2025 Gdansk

9 Jun 2025
On Monday 9th June, representatives of ECF’s Cities & Regions for Cyclists, a network of over sixty local and regional authorities, met in Gdansk for the CRC Network Day 2025! This annual in-person meeting gives the local and regional administrations of the network the chance to meet, discuss, exchange ideas and acquire new knowledge. It also serves as the kick-off event for the Velo-city conference week.

Taking place in the historic Great Wety Hall of the Main Town Hall of Gdansk, this year’s edition of the Cities & Regions for Cyclists (CRC) Network Day was co-organised by ECF together with the City of Gdansk, a CRC member, and was kindly sponsored by the Dutch Cycling Embassy.

Henk Swarttouw, President of ECF, opened the event, welcomed the members and thanked our host and sponsor. He also highlighted some of ECF’s important advocacy wins over the last year and their impact on the local and regional level.

Łukasz Kłos, Director of Public Transport Authority at the City of Gdansk gave a warm welcome to the participants, and expressed the city’s anticipation over the last few years in preparation to host Velo-city 2025 Gdansk! He also underlined the efforts made by the city in recent years towards improving conditions for cyclists and invited the participants to enjoy Gdansk during their stay.

The morning programme saw representatives of the City of Gdansk lead participants on a technical visit for a first-hand experience of recent cycling infrastructure improvements, with a special emphasis on how the city has addressed black spots on the cycling network and how it has improved the accessibility and safety for cyclists.

Following the technical visit, the Dutch Cycling Embassy representatives led an afternoon workshop with participants. The workshop highlighted shared experiences and challenges as well as key ideas for creating an inclusive cycling culture, while addressing blind spots that cities and regions face, with an emphasis on software, orgware and hardware. New perspectives, ideas and strategies are the main takeaways, as a result of excellent facilitation by our sponsors, and the active participation of our members from very different local contexts!
