ECF welcomes the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) to Cities & Regions for Cyclists (CRC), a network that brings together local and regional administrations, committed to promoting cycling as a mode of transport and leisure, collectively representing over 58 million citizens across Europe and beyond.
The AMB is the public administration of the metropolitan area of Barcelona, a large urban conurbation made up of 36 municipalities. It has long been committed to climate neutrality, improving air quality, reducing noise pollution, and eliminating traffic-related fatalities, putting cycling at the centre of its policy solutions. With 80% of trips being under 10km, there is huge potential for cycling as a viable form of transport for short-distance travel within the metropolitan area.

Last month, the Metropolitan Council of the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) approved its joining of the CRC Network, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to cycling as a major part of its urban mobility strategy. The AMB’s accession to the CRC Network culminates ten years of hard work since AMB’s creation of the
Metropolitan Bicycle Office in 2015.
One of the most prominent cycling developments by AMB has been the completion of the
Bicivia, a metropolitan cycling network currently about 66% complete. Other ongoing projects inlcude
Bicibox, a secure parking service providing over 2,700 spaces across 31 municipalities and 23,000 registered users, as well as
AMBici, the metropolitan public bike share system which delivered over 2,600 e-bikes in 15 municipalities, with over
17,000 registered users. The AMB has involved tens of municipalities in each project, creating a shared mission and making cycling viable throughout the region.

The AMB was recognised for its efforts to make cycling more accessible and viable in
2021, when it received a
Cycle-Friendly Employer CFE Bronze Level Certification. This is a certification by ECF, implemented in Spain by Bikefriendly Group, and it rewards the efforts made by employers in improving the conditions for their employees that cycle to work.
