The Velo-city Global 2012 took place in Vancouver, Canada 26th – 29th June 2012. After Copenhagen in 2010 this was the second Global Edition of the Velo-city conference series. For more information on the conference please go to www.velo-city2012.com.
On the last day of the conference, ECF and the City of Vancouver launched the Charter of Vancouver on the right of children to safe cycling. International, national or local institution may support the Charter and use it as a tool for promoting safe cycling for children as a fundamental human right. Alyson Fletcher participated in Velo-city 2011 in Seville and won the free ticket of the evaluation conference. At Velo-city Global 2012 in Vancouver she’s presenting her research on the usage of protected bike lane with case-study the new bike lane network in Chicago, Illinois.
Alyson answered to our questions and shared with us her last-year Velo-city experience in Seville and her expectations from the Global version in Vancouver 2012 while shared as well her insight view from cycling in North America and the role of cycling as part of urban transportation.

Quebec is a North American leader when it comes to cycling. Some neighbourhoods in Montreal have 7% of all trips by bicycle. Jean-Francois Pronovost, Vice-President of VéloQuébec speaks to ECF about cycling situation in Québec and Canada, the bike-share scheme in Montreal and how Europeans can learn from Canada about cycling.

- 03/04/2012: Early registration deadline extended until April 30, 2012
Velo-city Global 2012 is extending its early registration deadline until April 30, 2012. Due to the time required in a selection process involving a great number of quality speakers, as well as relevant and inspiring abstracts, the event organizers have decided to extend the deadline.
This will be good news for the numerous delegates who have contacted Velo-city Global 2012 to say they are awaiting approval on travel requests and funding approval.
- 26/01/2011: Velo-city Global 2012 Celebrates Liveability by Bicycle
Velo-city Global is the world’s premier international cycling planning conference. Spread out over four days, it will provide delegates from around the world an opportunity to share best practices for planning, creating, and sustaining cycling-friendly cities. By recognizing bicycles as an important part of daily life for people of all ages, it will serve to not only promote cycling as a viable, and efficient, mode of transport, but as an integral component in fostering greener, healthier communities, and more liveable urban centres overall. There will be no shortage of bicycling inspiration at Velo-city Global 2012, both within the conference, and outside in the host city.
The conference theme of Cities in Motion could just as well be referring to cities heading in the right direction as far as their residents are concerned. Four other cities ranking in the top ten of either The Economist’s World’s Most Liveable Cities, or Mercer’s Quality of Living Survey, will be present: Vienna Austria, Copenhagen Denmark, Helsinki Finland, and Adelaide Australia.
Program themes at Velo-city Global 2012 will include: leadership, the latest in urban planning and cycling infrastructure, safety, cycling transport mode share growth, empowerment and inclusivity, and new technology. Additional pivotal themes such as public bike sharing initiatives, combined mobility through the integration of cycling with transit and other transport modes, movement of goods by bicycle, and tourism opportunities will provide topics of key interest to improve mobility and the economy whilst providing momentum to keep cycling moving in the right direction – forward.
Mayor Gregor Robertson and the City of Vancouver have committed to making Vancouver a cycling city through their Active Transportation Master Plan, part of a green transportation initiative designed to give Canada’s third largest city, host of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, another top tier finish on the podium. Going for gold, Vancouver aims to be the greenest city in the world by 2020.
Compact, higher-density neighbourhoods, combined with integrated bicycling-transit solutions, and 400 lane-kilometers of bicycle facilities have promoted a network of greater mobility. Improved connections between homes, work, shopping, and the city’s many parks and beaches not only make Vancouver a recreational playground, and arguably one of the most beautiful cities anywhere, but also one of North America’s top cycling cities. Velo-City Global is Vancouver’s latest international event: one that will share a sustainable, cycling-friendly vision with the world, one speaker, and one pedal stroke at a time.
