The Rhone Route travels through the Valais, amidst magnificent mountain scenery. Along quiet, attractive riverside paths. The route continues along Lake Geneva’s famous Promenade of Palms, past the picturesque Lavaux vineyards, ending after 320km at the charmingly cosmopolitan city of Geneva.
On fine afternoons, a strong headwind blows up the Rhone Valley in Valais, and this can considerably increase travelling time. The Rhone Route becomes family friendly if you take extra care on a few stretches. The Ernen-Mörel section has been closed because of very poor condition. The diversion leads along the busy main road in Talboden. As an alternative, take the Niederwald - Brig railway.* The only ways through Pfynwald are via the very busy main road or by train. A hilly unsignposted variation via Leuk, Varen and Salgesch takes you through vineyards, with stunning scenery as your reward. Long stretches of the route alongside Lake Geneva are on very busy sections of the main road. An attractive alternative, apart from the train, is to relax and cruise this section by lake steamer. |
