30.01.2004Cycling along the Canal du Midi
One of the most enjoyable ways to explore the Canal is by cycling along the shaded towpaths. They´re closed to any kind of motor vehicle, including motorbikes and mopeds, so they?re peaceful, safe and quiet. Contact VNF, the agency that manages the canal, for permission to cycle on the paths. Buy a guide to cycling beside the canal, for tips and information on the most picturesque routes and where to stay.

The surface of the towpaths is uneven. In many places, the path is worn away and in others it has been replaced by a track. However, there are about 45 miles of good quality cycle-track in and around the main towns, plus 125 miles of dirt track. In some areas, the ground is unstable. In others, you´ll have to watch out for tree roots and gravel. On the whole, you can enjoy family cycling without any problems, but have your first-aid kit ready for minor cuts and bruises... Racing bikes are not allowed. Instead, you should have a mountain bike or tourer with good tyres.
