17.06.2004Cycling the recumbent bike in Provence
"..After breakfast, we rode over to the famous Roman Amphitheater of Arles, built in 90 AD. It was cut out of rock, and could fit 20,000 spectators. In the early 1800s, 212 houses and 2 churches existed inside the arena, but these were cleared out for a major restoration. It never ceases to amaze me what humans can do to rock without the benefits of cut-saws, backhoes, and cranes..

..We finally got underway after exiting the maze that forms the roadways within Arles. Once out into the countryside, the beauty of nature surrounded us. It started to warm up a bit, but it was still quite cool for this time of year in that area..

..We got up at a reasonable 7:00 am and had our typical petite déjeuner of fresh rolls and croissants, jam, butter, juice and coffee. We meandered out to get our bikes, said farewell to our gracious hosts, and we were off. Didn´t get far, we stopped at Le Chateau de Tarascon, the Castle of Tarascon. This thing is huge, and built for royalty. These people had to have great legs, there must have been 1200 steps to get to the top. But once on top, the view of the surrounding town and countryside in the distance was breathtaking. Lots of pictures snapped here.."
