24.03.2005The passage of the monks of Pannonhalma
As we go on the tour track marked with red, we can get acquainted with the cultural values of the region while we can ride on easy public roads and gravelled by-ways. The tour starts in Györ, in the city where not only the different regions and waters meet but historical times as well. The castle which protected the province in the Roman times and also the civil town next to it bore the name Arabona. In the time of the settlement of the magyars in Hungary and during the foundation of the state, it got a bishopric and bailiffs were appointed. The residence of the bishops of Györ is situated in the well-known Püspökvár, which can be easily recognized from a long distance of its broken tower. Györ placed third in the national comparison of the monuments. It is worth taking a look at the most famous sights of the city, for example the Héderváry chapel, the baroque carmalite church, the pharmacy museum, Szent Anna chapel, all of which are very interesting sights to see. From the city centre we can reach Ménföcsanak on a bike route where you can find the classicist Bezerédj castle and chapel, the Roman Catholic Church (built in 1773) and also a museum which is dedicated to the memory of the writer Erzsébet Galgóczi. As we go on the posted roads of the different settlements we reach the second village of our tour. Györújbarát is situated at foot of the Sokoró ridge of hills at its Csanak range. Here we can get acquainted with the Catholic churches of Kis and Nagybarát, both of which were built in 1750, the village museum, the vineyard and the wine cellars, which are essential parts of the region. In the village you can also visit the richly furnished L-shaped village museum. We can get a wonderful view from Franciakö (Frenchstone) to the land of Sokoró and the Small Plain. Napoleon Bonaparte also used this place in directing his troops. The next settlement is Nyúl, where you can have a look at the Roman Catholic Church, which is decorated with the baroque paintings of Dorffmeister, the Szent Donát chapel, and the Mária statue, all giving the taste of the inhabitants´ religiousness. Szurdik, Europe´s biggest rain washed ravine and the small hole cellars caved by the local inhabitants came into being in the loose rock (loess). In the village we can find several stone crosses and some classical rustic houses, all of them showing the taste and welfare of the former owners. From Nyúl to Écs we go along inner public roads and above the hemp fields we proceed on posted, gravelled by-ways. In Écs the religiousness of local people is reflected by the Roman Catholic Church and parsonage (Árpád-age origin), the stone crosses, the Mária post, and the Columbine. From here we can reach Pannonhalma, the centuries old Hungarian Benedictine centre, on a posted side road with low traffic. The Benedictine monument group came into being in a thousand years´ time. The abbey of Pannonhalma is not only an architectural monument holding valuable art treasures, but it also operates as a monastery. Above the crypt of the XIIth century there is a basilica of the XIIIth century, containing several gothic elements. The sanctuaries, the circular gallery, and the chapels are of the XIVth century. The baroque style is also present in the dining hall of the monastery. The tower of the church and the inner furnishing of the library bear some classicist elements. The high altar is the work of the second half of the XIXth century. In Pannonhalma there are several more sights to see, for example the granary of the abbey, the centre of the farms, the flag-bearer monument, the Calvary, the look-out tower, the former Szent Vince convent, the Boldogasszony chapel, the study path, the arboretum, the memory park and the Radnóti monument. Following the tour track marked with red, we can ride on side roads with low traffic, until we reach Ravazd, where the most important cultural and historical sights include the Roman Catholic Church (1744) of the settlement, the country house and the Béla-well. According to the legend, in 1241, King Béla IV. had a rest here when escaping after the lost battle with the tartars. He thrusted his sword into the ground where a spring busted. In 1792 a building was raised on the well. From Ravazd, we can reach Tarjánpuszta on a slightly ascending public road with low traffic. Then if we continue our trip we can get to Györasszonyfa, which was previously the land of the queen. Here we can visit the Roman Catholic Church of the village. The next point of our tour, Táp can be reached on a posted road, which goes on roads with low traffic along the last, flat range of the Sokoró hills through Pannonhalma. In Táp, it is worth taking a look at the Roman Catholic Church (1764), the Calvinist church of baroque style (1784), and also the ´Hegysor´ monument group (village museum of rustic houses of the previous century) is a very interesting sight to see. In 1851 the former country house got furnished, thus it not only preserves the architecture of a layer and an age but it also reflects the lifestyle of those people. With its triple structure (first or ´clean room´; back room; and kitchen with open-chimney), it gives a realistic picture of the way people lived in Hungarian villages, reflects their architectural style and it also presents their everyday household utensils and pieces of furniture. On posted routes, we can reach Tápszentmiklós, where tourists can visit the Calvinist and Roman Catholic Church of the settlement. While in the neighbouring Lázi, the Roman Catholic Church is worth taking a look at. From here we can get to Sikátor on a gravelled, but easy to ride road along the forest belt. If we go further, we can reach Veszprémvarsány on a wavy path, then again we can continue our way on gravelled tracks, until Bakonygyirót, which is the endpoint of the red tour. Here we join the blue route. If we follow the round tour on the yellow posted route, which starts in Pannonhalma, we can get to know the way people live in the nearby villages (Pannonhalma - Györság - Pázmándfalu - Nyalka - Pannonhalma).
