‘Biking the Balkans’ intends to be a trip across the Western Balkan countries, discovering sites of cultural and natural relevance. In fact, it will be a meta-event, a cluster of sport, cultural and natural events, organised to promote the idea of the sustainable development as a result of the interaction between the local initiatives and the global networking. At every site included in the biking itinerary, opportunities to debate issues of relevance for the territorial dynamics will be offered, combined with the unique chance to experience them directly, by discovering the natural beauties, the cultural emergencies and the local population traditions.
By linking various territories in a long biking itinerary, ‘BtheB’ intends to bring a positive visibility to the current activities across the Balkan region, related to protected areas, Biosphere Reserves, World Heritage Sites and other relevant sites. The close interconnections between the natural and cultural issues that are present in every site, will support a wider dialogue among the stakeholders.
The entire itinerary starts in Venice, Italy, and ends in Ohrid, FRY of Macedonia, alternating daily trips - for one site to the next (by bus) - and biking across the selected sites. ‘BtheB’ will cross Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro, Albania and Montenegro, stopping at 9 different sites. |
