By now the Saale Cycle Route exists for eleven years along the river between Zell and Barby – from source to mouth. With a total length of 427 kilometres it is one of the most demanding cycle routes in Germany. And thanks to the uniform signposting and the improved surface quality it is becoming increasingly popular. In its upper reaches the Saale Cycle Route is characterised by many slopes. Here, in the vicinity of the dams, it is popular amongst cyclists with sporting ambitions. The historic towns of Hof, Rudolstadt, Jena, Naumburg, Halle and Bernburg are inviting for a short stay and a visit to the numerous sights. In addition, about 200 bicycle friendly establishments cater for relaxing and culinary delights after the tour stages. Whether alone or in a group the Saale Cycle Route Working Group recommends riding the distance in seven, nine or eleven days; luggage transport offers are available, too. At Naumburg one can make a detour along the Unstrut Cycle Path in the northernmost cultivation area of premium wine in Europe or ride via the Ilm Cycle Route in the direction of Weimar. The booklet newly published for the International Tourism Fair (ITB) 2005 ´Erlebnis Saale-Radwanderweg´ (Saale Cycle Route Experience) contains many tips and valuable advice: from elevation profiles to service stations to tourist information and tour operators.
