04.11.2005Prague – Vienna Greenways
Prague – Vienna Greenways is a network of walking and biking trails connecting historic towns and villages through charming countryside, including national park and historic sites, UNESCO Heritage sites and biospheres in Bohemia and Moravia, and two wine regions in South Moravia and Lower Austria. The countryside offers variety of terrains from rolling hills, deep forests and open fields, lakes and ponds to mostly flat lands with limestone formations. The backbone trail between Prague Vienna is 430km long.

Prague-Vienna Greenways (PVGW) started in 1990 as a project of broad cooperation of municipalities, non – profit organizations and businesses. The project mobilizes local communities to be more pro-active in regards of environmental issues and cultural preservation in their region. In the process of building greenways, people of all generations re-discover their local history, participate in beautification of their villages, planting of new trees, preserving traditional crafts and organizing events to revitalize their cultural life and attract soft tourism. The PVGW project has pioneered cooperation between nonprofit civic organizations and commercial for-profit partners.

This Greenway is managed and developed by the civic association Prague – Vienna Greenways with assistance of the Czech Environmental Partnership foundation. Members of this association are municipalities and associations along the trail.
