To achieve this, a strong ECF is needed: In 2012 the ECF has a highly professional representation in Brussels, strong member organisations in every European country, a sound financial situation, an excellent service for the individual members of the member organisations, a good support for the member organisations, and is the well known, most accepted, most powerful European bicycle user organisation in politics, administration, bicycle industry, bicycle trade, tourism, the public, and employs therefore in the Brussels ECF office at least 5 employees, working in the main fields of ‘bicycle planning and infrastructure', 'road safety and technique', 'sustainable tourism', 'health and quality of life' and 'marketing and development'."

4) Presentations

To the participants of the AGM following presentations were presented:

5) Workshops

Participants also had the possibility to attend three parallel workshops:

  • On “EuroVelo/cycling tourism: certification of long distance routes – additional EuroVelo routes in the future?”, given by Horst Hahn-Klöckner, ADFC; during the AGM, also the new EuroVelo cycle route maps arrived: http://www.ecf.com/3166_1
  • On “Road safety”, given by John Franklin, CCN
  • On “Marketing”, given by Kevin Mayne, CTC
  • There was also a pre-AGM workshop on “Cycling in Central and Eastern Europe”, organized by Nadace Partnerstvi

6) The AGM adopted the draft ECF Position on helmets:

“At Velo-City 2007 delegates heard that cyclists live longer and healthier lives, that serious head injuries are rare and that the evidence in favour of helmet wearing and helmet laws is weak. The main effect of helmet laws has not been to improve cyclists’ safety but to discourage cycling, undermining its health and other benefits.

We therefore call upon authorities to:

  1. focus on well-established measures to promote cycling and cyclists' well-being;
  2. recognise that the benefits of cycling far outweigh the risks;
  3. refrain from promoting or enforcing helmet wearing without sound evidence that this would be beneficial and cost-effective compared to other safety initiatives.”

7) Velo-city 2009 Brussels

The AGM participants were informed about the preparation of Velo-city 2009 in Brussels, held on May 11-15. For further information visit: www.velo-city2009.com
