06.09.2005Brandenburg: Prince Pueckler Way connects countries

Germany´s most beautiful parks and bizarre lunar landscapes, Spree Forest romance and imposing industrial monuments. Hardly any cycle route offers as much variety as the Prince Pueckler Way. In spring 2005 this cross-border cycle path was opened. It connects, for about 500 kilometres, numerous tourist sights in the Brandenburg, Saxon and Polish parts of the Lausitz (Lusatia). The route is named after Hermann Prince of Pueckler-Muskau, the brilliant 19th century garden designer. In Bad Muskau and Branitz (Cottbus) he created two park and castle estates, which count among the most beautiful in Germany. Both parks are only 60 kilometres apart from one another and can be comfortably reached along the wild and romantic Neisse meadows in a day’s stage. A completely different landscape, arranged by human hands, can be marvelled only a half stage further. The Lusatian lignite coalfield, rich in tradition, presently is Europe’s largest landscape construction site. Here mountains (of mining debris) are moved and artificial lakes created. Where today breathtaking lignite-coal pits still lie open, in 10-15 years the largest chain of lakes created by man shall attract water sports and tourists.
