New Caledonia is the third largest island in the Pacific Region after Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. With its well-preserved trails, a cyclist-only bike park, a world-class velodrome and major races almost every month, this small cluster of islands halfway between Australia and New Zealand has become a mecca for bikers enthusiasts.
The mainland has an international airport in Tountouta, just outside Nouméa. Most airlines charge at least EUR 90 to carry bikes, so if you are not competing, just rent a "velo de montagne", a mountain bike, expect to pay about EUR 10 a day.
Five hundred kilometers long, fifty kilometers wide, New Caledonia offers an endless variety of landscapes, from some of the best white sand beaches in the Pacific to spectacular mountain retreats
