Students from West Exe Technology College will be pedalling their way to a free ‘Bikers Breakfast’ to celebrate National School Sports Week on Friday 4 July. The free breakfast is one of many events that have been happening over the last year as part of the Sustrans Bike It project.

Bike It Officer, Emma Osborne has been working with West Exe Technology College over the last year to raise awareness of cycling and its benefits. The aim is to encourage and support students to choose two wheels instead of four for the school journey. Participating schools across England have seen levels of cycling treble within a year– bucking the trend in declining numbers of children cycling to school.

Emma said: “The last year working with everyone at West Exe Technology College has been great. It has been fantastic to see the interest in cycling steadily grow throughout the year. West Exe now has nearly 100 students cycling to school regularly. The free breakfast would not have been possible without the support from Carillion and MJ Baker.”

“We know from our research that almost a third of children would like to cycle to college when only 1% currently do - there’s an enormous potential for increasing cycling levels in this country. It is vital that we give young people the opportunity to travel in ways, which are healthy, sustainable and fun.”

West Exe Technology College is just one of 10 schools across Exeter that is taking part in the Bike It project. Bike It is a nationwide scheme, managed by sustainable transport charity Sustrans. Nationally the project is funded by Cycling England, and the cycle industry through the Bike Hub, locally Bike It is supported by Devon County Council.
