Route: The Salzkammergut Cycling Trail takes you round one of Austria’s most beautiful landscapes. It is a circular route, so you can begin it anywhere you choose. The route takes in a number of picturesque places such as Salzburg, St. Gilgen, St. Wolfgang, Bad Ischl, Gmunden and Hallstatt, and it includes opportunities to make numerous excursions – boat trips on the various lakes, for instance, or a visit to the Dachstein caves. Unlike the riverside cycling routes, this trail is punctuated by gradients, some of them fairly steep but never extreme. Most of the route is asphalted.
Highlights St. Wolfgang and Wolfgangsee. In summer St. Wolfgang is a very popular holiday resort. Don’t miss the chance to ride on the funicular railway (more than a hundred years old) up the Schafberg. Today diesel locomotives are used. The local tourist office has details of special excursion trips with the vintage steam engine, whose plume of smoke can be seen far and wide as it chugs up the mountainside. |
