 | | | | It is 177 kilometres long, leads from the Ems to the Weser and through the middle of the Geest landscape formed in the Stone Age: The Geest Cycle Route is northern Germany pure. Start is in Meppen, the „green town on the water“. From here it runs through the rolling hills of the Hümmling, in whose woods lie 5,000 year old megalithic tombs. At Sögel a halt at Schloss Clemenswerth is almost obligatory: The baroque central palace with its guest pavilions and the monastery garden lie in the middle of an eight rayed tree-lined star. Through the Thülsfeld dam recreational area in the Oldenburg Münsterland the Geest Cycle Route continues on to Cloppenburg museum village. Here stands Germany’s oldest open-air museum, which tells everything about the rural life of the region. The Pestrup cemetery, about 3,000 years old, within the nature park Wildeshauser Geest is the largest preserved burial mound field in northern Europe. One reason for the region being under nature and monument protection is the King’s Mound with a diameter of 30 metres lying right among the 450 burial mounds. After Syke cyclists finally reach the Hanseatic city of Bremen, in which there is much more to discover than the Bremen Town Musicians.
