 | | | | Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817) sought to unite man, nature and landscape in harmony. Thus he created the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom: Magnificent palaces, extensive parklands, green tree-lined avenues as well as sculptures and miniature architectures overwhelm visitors to this day – in the year 2000 the garden realm became UNESCO World Heritage. On a 65 kilometre circular route it can be explored on mainly car-free or quiet routes. From Schloss Mosigkau one reaches the imposing palaces and parklands Großkühnau, Georgium and Luisium. Behind the small place Vockerode appears – 17 kilometres east of Dessau – Wörlitz. This became famous through the first English landscape park on the European mainland. The whole park appears as if having grown by chance, it is however thought-out in detail. South of Wörlitz the Garden Kingdom Tour leads onwards to Oranienbaum with its old palace and its park with a Chinese teahouse. On the Euroroute R1 it continues past a beaver compound and the Tower of the Eight Winds, the Napoleon Tower, in Dessau-Mildensee back to Dessau-Mosigkau. Who has not had enough of architecture, can continue along the 17 kilometre Bauhaus tour through Dessau and, among other things, look at the Masters’ Houses and the Bauhaus training centre designed by Walter Gropius.
