22.02.2008Bavaria: The Palaces Tour

Palaces are the epitome of a dreamy story world. Who wants to be captured by its spell on a bicycle, can do so along the „Schlösser-Tour“ [Palaces Tour] in the Kitzinger Land. Over 38 kilometres it leads, signposted with a crown logo, on mostly surfaced paths with a few gentle ascents through the northwest of Bavaria. Where the river Main makes its way, vines thrive, and the Steiger forest blooms, fascinate centuries old castles and palaces. At the start and destination of the circular route, at Wiesentheid, a Count of Schönborn had his aristocratic seat built about 450 years ago. Nowadays the majority of the palaces lying en route are found to be in the private ownership of the Schönborns, but tourists can look at them from the outside. Via Prichsenstadt, Brünnau, Bimbach and Neudorf cyclists reach Altenschönbach with its moated palace. On it goes via Kirchschönbach to the ancient monastery at Ilmbach and from here the best way is along the forest track to Geesdorf, which marks about the half-way point of the circuit. Behind Untersambach awaits Abtswind with its magnificent palace. After a few kilometres one finally reaches Castell. Here one can sense history in the ruins of the palace built in 1525 by the Counts of Castell. In Rüdenhausen several buildings recall aristocratic life in the Middle Ages.

Tip: The „Schlösser-Tour“ is one of twelve thematic routes which the region Kitzinger Land has published in a handy cycle touring map. For 4.50 euros it is available in tourism offices. At www.radfahren-kitzingerland.de cyclists can display all the tours in an interactive bike portal.
