 | | | | Water is regarded as the source of life and health: On the Soleweg [Brine Route] in the Teutoburg Forest cyclists can convince themselves of the effects of salty water, the “white gold”. The cycle route orients itself on the course of the subterranean brine current in Wittekindsland and in the Lipperland and follows the line of the former Herford light railways. The approximately 90 kilometre route is divided into three sections: The light railway line central axis (34 kilometres), the southern circuit (32.5 kilometres) and the northern circuit (33.5 kilometres), their combination is left to individual preference. Special theme routes make the course an experience: In Spenge exists the „Innenstadt-Route“ [Town Centre Route], in Hiddenhausen the „Guts-Route“ [Estates Route] and in Herford the Brine Route touches the town centre. A trip along the signposted „City-Route“ will be rewarded with numerous sights of the town. The course of the former light railway today forms a significant part of the Brine Route. The path is signposted with the “Soleweg” logo. For orientation the words „Kleinbahn erfahren“ [Experience the Light Railway], „Soleweg Süd“ [Brine Route South] and „Soleweg Nord“ [Brine Route North] appear on the signposts. In the area of the north Lippian hills and the foothills of the Weser mountains several gradients are to be negotiated – the panoramic view, however, makes up for all the efforts. The tour booklet accompanying the Brine Route costs three euros and, in addition to a detailed route map, also contains tips about the sights in the particular towns.
