No obligatory Daytime Running Lights in Europe

The proposal by the European Commission to introduce Daytime Running Lights for motorised vehicles across Europe is off the table. This was announced by the Commission on 20 November 2007.

The European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) welcomes this decision. In its view the Commission did not present sufficient scientific evidence that a European legal obligation for all motorised vehicles to use Daytime Running Lights (DRL) would improve road safety for cyclists. On the contrary: DRL might well have reinforced the already strong position of four-wheeled vehicles in traffic, argued the ECF in a common position paper with the European Twowheel Retailers’ Association (ETRA) in December 2006.

In the same paper ECF and ETRA called upon the Commission to tackle instead much more pressing and important road safety issues such as reducing the overall speed and the volume of motorised traffic.
