30.11.2007Cyprus Cycling Routes

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation ( C.T.O ) in the framework of its coordinated efforts for the development and promotion of cycling tourism is implementing a cycling route network in Troodos Mountains. Through this project CTO also aims at the rejuvenation of the Cyprus inland areas.

The creation of the Troodos network is the first phase of implementation of a bigger comprehensive plan of a cycling network that was designed in 2005 and covers most of Cyprus inland areas. The circular route around the National Troodos Forest totaling a distance of 57 kilometers includes paved roads and unpaved rural paths and it is divided in 3 sections.

1a       Psilo Dentro (Platres) – Karvounas , 16,2 km

2b       Karvounas – Prodromos, 22,7 Km

3c        Prodromos – Psilo Dentro (Platres), 18, 2 km

The creation of the route includes, a blue line on the paved parts of the route, placement of information boards and directional signs (vertical sign), wooden benches in view points as well as bike stands.

The construction works have recently been completed while relevant literature (brochures, maps etc) will be published by February 2008.

The new infrastructure is being used by foreign and local cyclists alike. It should be noted that the blue line does not constitute exclusive bicycle circulation lane. It is used as guidance for cyclists for the route they must follow and as a reminder for drivers of possible heavy presence of cyclists in order to adjust their driving behavior accordingly. The project is co-funded by the C.T.O. and the E.U. Structural Funds.

In the long term, CTO’s aim is to link the rural cycle network with the coastal areas, creating a national route network spanning the entire island.
