 | | | | From “Pott” (Ruhr pot region) to “Watt” (mud flats): On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Dortmund-Ems Canal, this shipping route received a long-distance cycle path “as a present”. Since then over about 350 kilometres cycle tourists can get to know the canal, later the Ems river and its varied environs, in a pleasant way. The route leads without any climbs worthy of mention off busy roads from Dortmund Central Station to the landing stage in Norddeich through varied regions such as the Ruhr, Münsterland, Emsland and Ostfriesland. Along the route harbours, locks, or canal lifts remind one of the purpose of the canal: To guarantee navigability. In the Ruhr cycle tourists can discover industrial monuments. The route through Münsterland leads past villages and castles - and through the town of Münster. In Emsland river meadows, woodland, marshes, heath areas as well as the towns of Lingen and Lathen characterise the landscape left and right of the canal. From Papenburg the shipping route leads via the Ems. In Emden with its sea port the Ems flows into the Dollart, the long-distance cycle route, however, runs on further through the district of Aurich to Norddeich. Who after beach and mudflat has gained a fancy for the sea can cross over to Nordeney by ferry. The cycle touring map “Rad-Route Dortmund-Ems-Kanal”, Scale 1:50 000 is available in bookshops ISBN: 3-87073-240-7, Price: 9.95 Euro.
