15.10.2007Brandenburg: Glass Tour

On the 33 kilometre Glass Tour between Döbern and Bad Muskau cycle tourists experience the history of glass production in Lower Lusatia and gain insights into the still to this day resident glass industry. The production of the fragile material is an important economic factor since the 18th century in the Muskau Arch fold - an elevation formed in the Elster ice age, thus 500,000 - 600,000 years ago. This geological fold structure can be recognised from the Giesern, the up to 50 m long, 20 m deep and 30 m wide lakes and furrows in the terrain. For cycle tourists this means a ride in lightly undulating terrain through small villages, woodlands and meadows on a well signposted asphalted route.

In the 19th century Döbern became one of the most important glass sites, still today lead crystal is manufactured here - how, visitors learn on weekday guided tours. From Döbern one continues southwest to Friedrichshain, the region’s first glassworks location. In Jämlitz, the south-easternmost part of the route, Fürst Pückler had a glassworks built in 1815. From here the route leads via Tschernitz back to Döbern.
