Bike & Train

Better condition for bicycle transport on trains is a high priority for the European Cyclists' Federation. It belongs to the "permanent tasks" and as such is in the working program of the Management Committee.

Bicycle Carriage on Long Distance Trains in the European Union

The present study has been commissioned and financed by the European Cyclists’ Federation, an umbrella organization representing 48 national member associations from 36 countries. The main goal of the European Cyclists' Federation is the promotion of the bicycle at European as well as international level and create a favourable climate in transport, environmental and tourism policies.

The use of the bicycle is increasingly popular in Europe and bicycle tourism is one of the most rapidly growing sectors in European economy.

Bicycle carriage on trains is a relevant issue for the further development of the bicycle usage in Europe, allowing an optimal intermodal combination of friendly modes of transport and the creation of efficient mobility chains.

If bicycle carriage is already widespread on local and regional rail services, the recent evolution of long distance rail transport has not considered the needs of customers with bicycles and has caused a relevant decrease of the offer and of the bicycle carried on long distance trains in the EU in the last 10 years. Currently, less than 10% of EU long distance trains allow bicycle carriage.

Bicycle Carriage on Trains in Russia
According to the regulations every passenger may carry up to 36 kg (50 kg for the 1st class). Bicycles should be demounted (at least wheels, pedals, handlebar) and covered. The main problem is to find place to keep especially if there are more than one bicycle. In the 3rd class it is easier because there are special luggage berths there.

CER Press Release: Progress on the Third Railway Package, but some of the railways’ concerns remain

19 December 2006

Extracts:
Colin Hall, CER Deputy Executive Director, said "Railway companies already convey both bicycles and other passenger equipment on a wide range of train services, either in separate accommodation or in common space open to all passengers. However there are practical limits to this, either in train design or in the priority to fare paying customers themselves at peak periods. Parliamentarians must know that the amendment mandating such separate compartments in all trains is simply not feasible. An alternative practical solution has to be found.”

It may also be worth mentionning that the Deutsche Bahn (Germany) web has the most complete international trains database, and its efficient search engine provides an option to search trains which carry bikes.

Bicycle parking at the Dutch train stations

In the Netherlands the bicycle is not only a much used means of transport, but also a major link in the public transport chain. The Dutch railway companies have particularly large numbers of cyclists amongst their passengers. Approx. 30 percent of train passengers reach the station by bike. Approx. 10 percent leave stations by bike. And every year, these percentages increase.

More information about taking bikes on foreign trains The European Cyclists’ Federation ECF has for years pressed the European railways to provide better information about access regulations and rates for taking bikes on trains. This has now led to success. The result is the cycling part of a new web site which offers, in a harmonized format, a variety of information about taking bicycles by 18 train companies. The address is www.railpassenger.info . Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) has thoroughly revised its Internet presence in April and also extended the notes for cyclists. The link Bahn & Fahrrad takes one to Train & Bike international. The link to www.railpassenger.info is to be found here in a general text. Also, on the right hand side there are details on individual foreign states. Thus one learns e.g. which trains from Germany allow accompanying bikes. These details and via railpassenger are partly the same and in part complementary.
