Immerse into the world of the ancient Vikings and Frisians - amidst fascinating nature between the North Sea and the Baltic. Anyone who finds the thought of this attractive, should make a note of the “Wikinger-Friesen-Weg” [“Viking-Frisian-Route”]. The 180 kilometre cycle route connects the fishing town Maasholm on the Baltic and St. Peter-Ording on the North Sea coast. The eastern route runs via Kappeln - the harbour town well-known through the ZDF television series “Der Landarzt” [“The Country Doctor”] as “Deekelsen”. The southern as well as the northern bank of the Schlei lure travellers into the culture and Viking town of Schleswig. During a visit to Schloss Gottorf museum and the Viking museum at Haithabu the bikes can have a rest. Just before the end of the next stage one is spoilt for choice at Hollingstedt: The north tour leads via Ostenfeld and Schwabstedt to the little Dutch town of Friedrichstadt, the south tour via Süderstapel, Bergenhusen and Seeth. Beyond the Eiderstedt peninsula one passes Tönning harbour whence the continually signposted Viking-Frisian-Route on the north tour via Garding as well as on the coastal south tour leads to St. Peter Ording on the North Sea.
