Schleswig-Holstein has a new long-distance cycle route: the 340 kilometre Monks Way. It follows in the tracks of the first Christian missionaries in the Middle Ages from Glücksstadt on the Elbe to the Baltic Sea island Fehmarn - past numerous old churches and monasteries. From Glücksstadt the route leads along the river Stör to Itzehoe, where the remains of a former Cistercian convent and a well preserved cloister can be seen. In the Karl May town of Bad Segeberg the interested can visit the Augustinian canons monastery. Those wanting to take part in active monastic life, include an excursion to the Benedictine monastery in Nütschau. Here, House Ansgar offers opportunities for rest and contemplation. In the footsteps of monk and missionary Vicelin the Monks Way leads via the churches in Börnhöved and Bosau to the Church of St. Johannes in Oldenburg, which once was the diocesan town of the North German missionary. Before Puttgarden the Benedictine monastery and the monastery church in Cismar deserve attention. The Monks Way is largely asphalted and signposted throughout. The few unsurfaced sections run through scenic areas. Over 40 cyclist friendly accommodations are available along the route (for further details see www.bettundbike.de).
