17.04.2007North Rhine-Westphalia: Circular Route on the Lower Rhine

Extensive meadows and willows are characteristic of this day tour along the Lower Rhine from Emmerich to Rees and back. The approximately 45 kilometre route near the Dutch border - one part of the Rhine Cycle Route - begins at the Emmerich Rhine promenade. After a complete overhaul this was newly opened in spring 2007 and shows the visitor a modern flood protection plant as well as a redesigned area with a culinary mile, rose garden, watercourse and canopied beach chairs.

From here with a view of the river Rhine one continues along the dyke to Rees through the nature reserve "de Hetter" with its characteristic pollarded willows. These are willows whose head has become denser due to the regular cutting of the rods over time. After a rest in Rees and a walk around the historical old town one crosses the Rhine on the round tour either by ferry or over the bridge near Rees. The route continues on the left side of the Rhine along the Rhine dyke back to Emmerich past the leisure centre "Kalkar Wonderland" with merry-go-rounds, a helter-skelter and a white-water ride. With a ride over the longest suspension bridge in Germany back to the right side of the Rhine the day trip ends at the starting point on the Rhine promenade in Emmerich.
