Deep ravines and expansive plains, old monastic ruins and the charm of the post-war period - whoever goes on the Monks Tour experiences contrasts. Strolling in the footsteps of the Cistercian monks, the 105 kilometre round tour starts at the Müllrose spa and after a short distance already invites to an excursion to the lake Helenensee with its fine sandy beach. One continues via Briskow-Finkenheerd along the river Oder. Many small dreamy villages line the route. At Eisenhüttenstadt the traveller then reaches the only larger town on the way. Founded by order of the SED (United Socialist Party) in 1950 here the visions of urban development of the socialist planned economy can be experienced. However, the over 700 year-old Fürstenberg is also part of this town and its late Gothic architecture comes as a surprise. After the confluence of the Oder and Neisse rivers the historical highlight of the tour is reached: The town of Neuzelle impresses as a "Bohemian oasis" with its sprawling monastery complex which built in the 13th century by Cistercian monks survives to this day. The last part of the route then leads into the natural Schlaubetal valley on natural paths. Here one gains an impression of how arduous the life of the monks must have been at the time. The Monks Tour will be completely signposted as of June.
