Bright red brick on a stately 117.5 metres: The brick cathedral in Schwerin is one of the tallest churches in Germany. Here the 380 kilometre Western Brick Circuit begins. Past meadows and woods, enthusiasts of the fired stone cycle to Schönberg, to the Church of St. Lawrence, to Dassow as well as to the beaches and steep cliffs of the Mecklenburg bay. Besides their brick splendour Kalkhorst and Bothmer castles also offer ornate gardens. Another highlight of the route is the Hanseatic town of Wismar with its brick buildings in the historical old town which was appointed World Cultural Heritage in 2002 by UNESCO. From Wismar the route leads to Kühlungsborn via Rerik. An impressive section follows along the steep bank on the Baltic Sea through the shadows of old, wind swept beeches to Warnemünde. Fried fish instead of fired brick: The Warnemünde port and its floating fish stalls are a must. Three monumental brick churches await the cycle tourists in Rostock. On the route the Doberan minster, regarded as the culmination of the North German Brick Gothic style, should not be missed. The brick enthusiasts finally cycle through small villages with stately churches via the village of Mecklenburg back to Schwerin.
