"Human Powered Mobility" - A term coined at ECF conference

Brussels, April 28 – May it be called “Human Powered Mobility”, “Unmotorized transport” or “Active travel” – the European Cyclists’ Federation and the Protestant Academy Tutzing together invited to reflect on cycling policy in Europe from April 20-22 in Tutzing near Munich on the shore of the Starnberg Lake. Around 50 people from 10 European countries followed this call and analyzed this vast topic in plenaries and workshops from different angles. The often difficult relationship between the bicycle and car (industry) as the main element of "motorised transport" was addressed by Manfred Neun, ECF President, in his opening speech.

ECF meets Rapporteur Reinhard Rack to discuss Green Paper on Urban Mobility
From left: Annick Roetynck (ETRA), Reinhard Rack (MEP), Dr Bernhard Ensink (ECF) and Greet Engelen (Colibi/Coliped).

Brussels, April 16 - After the European Commission published its Green Paper on Urban Mobility last year, it’s now up to the European Parliament to deliver an opinion on it. In this process, Member of European Parliament Reinhard Rack, rapporteur on the Green Paper in the responsible Transport and Tourism Committee, plays a key role. Therefore ECF joined forces with the European Twowheel Retailers’ Association (ETRA) and with the European Bicycle Industry (COLIBI/COLIPED) to discuss common ideas with Mr Rack. These include more thorough research, data and statistics on cycling in Europe as well as the revision of the allocation of European resources with a view to improving and increasing cycling in Europe, among other. Mr Rack, who is likely to receive more than 300 amendments on his draft report said: "You can be sure that you will have fairly strong support from the European Parliament for promoting cycle usage in European transport policy." ECF therefore looks forward to the vote in the committee on May 27/28 and in the plenary in June. The European Parliament opinion will have a crucial impact on the Action Plan the European Commission is coming up with this autumn.

Report on ECF Parliamentary Evening, November 27th, 2007

From left: MEP Erik Meijer, Natascha van Bennekom, Dutch Cyclists' Association and

"All trains should allow bicycle carriage on trains, including high-speed trains." That was the key message the European Cyclists’ Federation presented during its Parliamentary evening to the present Members of the European Parliament in Brussels. Bicycle tourism such as on the EuroVelo 6 Route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea is taking off across Europe. This positive trend can only be continued if cyclists can enjoy a safe and comfortable bicycle carriage to the route and back home.
