14.07.2006Thuringian Town Chain
Cycling from town to town: the "Thuringian Town Chain" crosses the Free State, and over 240 kilometres connects seven Thuringian towns between Eisenach and Altenburg. The stage destinations are Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena and Gera and have much to offer for the art-, culture- and technically-minded cycle tourists. Historical town centres, parks and numerous sights invite one to discover the links of the chain of towns and stroll in the steps of German celebrities. Like in Eisenach, the native town of Bach or in Weimar, domain of Goethe and Schiller. In between lies the charming countryside of Thuringia which is traversed from west to east. The long-distance cycle route is part of the Midland route D4 and thus tied to the planned German network which here, however, is not yet signposted. Furthermore the "Thuringian Town Chain" lies on other long-distance cycle paths such as the Werra Valley Cycle Route or the Ilm Valley Cycle Route which are suitable for excursions. The "Town Chain" must not be cycled in one stint. As all seven towns are reachable by train, single legs can be undertaken or combined with others. The route has an easy to middle degree of difficulty and runs for the most part over asphalt. As not all stretches are completely developed and signposted it is recommended to contact the tourist information offices in the individual towns before embarking on a tour.
