The new Secretary General of the ECF, Dr Bernhard Ensink, presented on the ECOMM 2006 conference, 10-12 May, Groningen, Netherlands, in a key-note paper his vision on the Dutch Bike-experience: the history and the results of the Masterplan Fiets. Ensink closed his presentation with the message to the participants of the mobility management conference with the thesis: ‘We can increase the number of bicycle trips and kilometres (even in the Netherlands)’. A few weeks after the conference the news about cycling in Holland supported his prophecy: in the Netherlands 34,7% of all trips less than 7,5 km’s are made by bicycle and that the Dutch in 2006 cycled 14,4 Billion km’s, a half billion more than in the year 2003.
