11.05.2006Schleswig-Holstein: Five years North Sea Coastal Cycle Route

Rolling along the dyke with tailwind, nose in the healthy salty air, looking out to the open sea – that’s cycling on the North Sea Coastal Cycle Route. From May 13th to 21st 2006 Schleswig-Holstein celebrates five years of "its" section of the North Sea Cycle Route, which encircles the entire North Sea: Guests and locals can book a North Sea Coastal Cycle Route Week package deal with eight or nine nights, luggage service and, on request, hired bikes. The places along the route organize a varied programme of events. From spring onwards North Sea enthusiasts can find all relevant information in the Internet at www.nordseekuestenradweg.de  and www.nordseetourismus.de. In addition, a new leaflet with map, important addresses and tips will appear for the start of the season. The North Sea Coast Cycle Route winds for more than 357 kilometres along the coast of Schleswig-Holstein from Wedel via Brunsbüttel, Büsum, St. Peter-Ording and Husum to Klanxbüll. On one side of the path sheep and cows are grazing on lush green pastures, on the other mudflats are spreading. Bike holiday-makers should for instance plan a longer stay in Büsum where the storm-flood world “Blanker Hans” will be opened in spring. On the Brunsbüttel lock one comes close to cruise liners and large freighters. In Tönning one enjoys fresh shrimps at the harbour. In Husum one strolls in the footsteps of the poet Theodor Storm. Forty-four information panels which were erected on the route in 2005 indicate further sights, information points and repair shops. Whoever wishes to continue the journey through Denmark, Sweden, Norway, England, Scotland, The Netherlands or Belgium, finds all information at www.northsea-cycle.com. The website will be revised for spring 2006.
