Organization

The FPCUB was founded in September of 1987, is a collective person of public utility, being composed currently by 400 collective members (associations and clubs) representing a total of around 25.000 persons.

The Portuguese Federation of Cycletourism and Bicycle Users (FPCUB) has as main objectives the development of the ecologist Cycletourism, maintenance and tourism, the promotion through the utilization of the bicycle, the defense and preservation of the environment and of the natural and built heritage.

Short Summary

It’s an Environmental Non Governmental Organization of national scope. It’s member of the ECF (European Cyclists' Federation), of the AIT/FIA (International Alliance of Tourism) and of the CONBICI (Iberian Coordination for Bicycle Defence).  It has collaborated with the UNESCO in the scope of the bicycle.  It is member founder and currently president of the Executive of the Portuguese Confederation of the Environmental Defence Associations.  It’s a founder member of the Portuguese Confederation of the nicotine addiction Prevention (COPPT).

 

It defends the bicycle continuing the recommendations of the WHO (World Health Organization) and studies that show that the health is the factor key that leads the persons to choose bicycle both for leisure and daily mobility (and that the utilization of the bicycle has an elevated potential for improve the public health to diverse levels – coronary illnesses, cholesterol, diabetes and nicotine addiction, between other).
Example activities

Develops the project "Portugal Ciclável" (Portugal on bike) with the objective of sensitize the public administration for the needed conditions for the safe utilization of bicycles as a non pollutant complement for the mobility in integration with the collective transports. This project developed already in some towns promote the development of safety road infrastructures. For example, had been signed in 15 of March of 2000 a cooperation protocol with the city council of Lisbon.

It organizes all years long the event "Old Lisbon by Bicycle", a tour by Lisboa roads with ecological and healthy objectives, awaking the population of Lisbon for the individual liberty that bicycle represents. It also promotes the bicycle in campaigns as the "24 Hours Pedaling for the Environment".

 

It has adhered to the "European Mobility Week", having organized and supported countless initiatives in all the country, in cooperation with diverse town councils and other entities.

 

In 1992 it organized the annual European Congress of the ECF and the Ist National Congress of Cycletourism and Bicycle Users; in 1994 the IInd National Congress; in 1996 the IIIrd National Congress  "Nine Years - a Mission of Public Interest" and the Ist Iberian Congress "The Bicycle and the City".  In September of 98 participated in Spain in the IInd Iberian Congress "The Bicycle and the City" in a co-organization with the association La Coruña en Bici.  In the year 2000 organized the IIIrd Iberian Congress in the city of Aveiro.  In 2002 co-organized the IVth Iberian Congress in Gíjon.  In 2004 it organized the Vth Iberian Congress "The Bicycle and the City" that took place in Oeiras in the days 17, 18 and 19 of September, integrated in the European Mobility Week.

 

Recuperated his headquarters in ‘Olho de Boi’ in Cacilhas/Almada, with the free effort of the associated members and offering of stuff.  In the headquarters there’s a kitchen and 20 beds that support different activities carried out by the FPCUB and other associations.

 

It organized the 52º RALLY of the International Alliance of Tourism that was carried out in Mafra in 1995 integrated in the "European Year of Nature Conservation" under the motto of the Advice of the Europe:  "We thought of the Future - we Respected the Nature", with the participation of 750 foreigners, representing 13 European countries, and more of 1.000 national cyclotourists.  In July of 2002 FPCUB organized again this big initiative in Portugal (with 1500 cyclotourists of 14 countries).

It created the National Bicycle Mobility Prize in Bicycle, which is carried out in the European Mobility Week.
