On the 120 kilometre “Saxon Towns Route” cycle tourists become acquainted with the towns of Goerlitz, Loebau, Bautzen and Kamenz. In 1346 together with two further towns they formed the well-fortified alliance of the Six Town Federation of Upper Lusatia. Beyond Dresden's city boundary the route leads past the country manors of Hermsdorf and Seifersdorf to Kamenz. In the native town of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing a museum cares for the heritage of the philosopher of Enlightenment. The Cistercian convent St. Marienstern in Panschwitz-Kuckau and the dinosaur park in Kleinwelka are well worth a detour. In the more than one thousand year old town of Bautzen seventeen towers form an impressive townscape. A walk through the remarkable old town is to be recommended, as is equally an excursion into the Sorbian kitchen. In Loebau one should visit the cast-iron Friedrich August Tower and the Scharoun House, an example of Bauhaus architecture. In the local town museum the original Six Town Federation Cup of 1346 can be seen. At the end of the tour in Goerlitz the “Whispering arches”, the Jewish Bath and the local mountain “Landeskrone” await the guests. The terrain profile is mainly moderately hilly. Dividing up the tour appropriately enables one to ride it also with children. |
